It's been fun

Man, I had a great time on vacation!  I've never seen anything as beautiful as some of the places we went.  The water was blue, the sand was white and CLEAN, and the food was endless, haha.  I probably gained ten pounds just over the course of the week.

While on the cruise, I was thinking about my blog (gay I know).  I started this blog with the intentions of just writing my thoughts and opinions on the paladin class, what I learned about warcraft, and occasionally, whatever else.  However, since then, I have changed, my interests have changed, and my passions have changed.  During the course of this blog, I've gotten engaged, found new interests in the tech and gadget world, and rediscovered my love for console gaming.

I'm abandoning this blog.  Sorry I threw it out there like that, but I suck at beating around the bush.  I've been using tumblr for about a year now and have become quite fond of it.  It's more of a social network than a blog hosting site, but I find it more enjoyable personally, which is the whole point right?  I'll still be writing, but it will be more in the form of a media stream than what this blog has been.

I have no idea how many people look at this blog anymore, or who finds anything I have to say worth a damn, but if YOU do, please feel free to follow me to my new home here.  Thanks for the ride all, it's been fun, and I met some great people who are truly gifted at putting their thoughts onto paper (er, screen).  I hope to see yall on the flip  :)

Sand, water, and beer

Well guys, I'm taking a vacation!

Its my grandparent's 50th anniversary, so we are all going on a cruise to celebrate and relax.  We're leaving Sunday coming, and won't be getting back until the following Sunday.  The cruise is going to Belize, Cozumel, Grand Cayman Islands, and Honduras.  I'm so excited I could piss myself.  Actually I should probably go clean this up.  RSS me and I'll post some pics and stories when I get back.  Adios and via con dios!

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2

Courtesy of NoOne00

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 has been given an official release date by LucasArts via their Facebook page.  Expect it to hit shelves October 26.  I like that it was announced on Star Wars day.  Good call LucasArts!

Personally, I found Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to be an incredibly enjoyable game to play.  It was engaging from beginning to end, the story was good and kept me interested, and it was just an overall great experience to sit down and play it for a few hours.  I’m looking forward to the follow up in October. Rumor has it that more details and revelations regarding Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 will be revealed at E3 in June.

Happy Star Wars day everyone!  May the 4th be with you.  I'll leave you with a Star Wars gangsta rap.  Enjoy.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is coming out this year.  Am I stoked?  HELL YES I AM!  I have been a Castlevania fan since it’s NES release.  After watching the trailer, and seeing how promising the content and gameplay looks, this is one of the games I’m looking forward to most in 2010.
The game is based on a character named Gabriel Belmont.  He has lost his wife to the souls of the dead who are lingering between life and afterlife.  He learns that with a holy relic which is guarded by the Lords of Shadow, he will have the power to bring his wife back from the dead.

There will be an assortment of faces to rip off within the game.  From the looks of the trailer, there will be content scaled to Gabriel’s level, as well as battles with huge titans, much like that of the Shadow of the Colossus game on PS2, which will require you to scale the body of the giant and commence to pwning.

There looks to be a definite Dante’s Inferno/God of War/Devil May Cry feel to the game, which is in no way a bad thing.  It only makes me look forward to itthat much more.  What do you guys think?  Are you excited, or just meh?  Leave a comment and tell me how you feel, and why you feel that way!

Busy weekend

If you all didn't know, I'll be getting hitched this coming November.  My old lady is getting stressed planning the wedding, so I'm going to give her a hand with a few things this weekend.  I may be able to get in an update from my blackberry, but no guarantees.  RSS me and i'll get back in full swing as soon as I can!

Cub Scouts to offer a pin for gaming

Boy Scouts of America stated that the Cub Scouts and Webelows are now offering beltloops and pins for gaming.  Wow, this is about 20 years late.  Maybe if people appreciated games in the 80s like they do now, I may have stayed in the cub scouts for longer than a week.  Oh wait, after reading the requirements for the pin and loop, I retract my previous statement.

For the easy pin/loop, Scouts have to:
  1. Explain the importance of the ESRB video game rating system.  Check your games to make sure they are right for your age
  2. With an adult, create a schedule for you to do things that includes your chores, homework, and video gaming. Do your best to follow this schedule.
  3. Learn to play a new video game that is approved by your parent, guardian, or teacher.
For the more difficult pin/loop, Scouts have to:
  1. With your parents, create a plan to buy a video game that is right for your age group.
  2. Compare two game systems (xbox, PS3, wii, etc).  Explain the differences between the two.  List good reasons to purchase or use a game system.
  3. Play a video game with family members in a family tournament.
  4. Teach an adult or a friend how to play a video game.
  5. List at least 5 tips that would help someone learning to play the game.
  6. Play an appropriate video game with a friend for one hour.
  7. Play a video game that will help you practice your math, spelling, or another skill that helps you in your schoolwork.
  8. Choose a game you might like to purchase.  Compare the price for this game at three different stores.  Decide which store has the best deal.  In your decision, be sure to consider things like the stores return policy and manufacturer's warranty.
  9. With an adults supervision, install a gaming system.
I think its great that educational organizations are embracing the rise of gaming.  I think this is a great way to teach kids at an early age what a healthy gaming hobby can be like.  I also think it will instill a good technological background into kids at an early age.  I know personally, I would not be the tech savvy stud that I am today if it weren't for Atari, Nintendo, and my first PC (which was nothing more than a gaming platform to me then).  What do you guys think of this move?  Do you think it will be healthy for kids at their ripe Cub Scout age?  Or will it set them up to be lazy bums in their future?

WoW: Thinking back and looking forward

As I have mentioned previously, my interest in WoW seems to have all but dried up.  I have been playing since its release in '04, which is almost a quarter of my life.  One would imagine that a video game could become a bit monotonous in that period of time.

Since the Burning Crusade expansion was released, the game has quite literally evolved into something that is completely different than it was when I bought and played the original.  Is that a good thing?  In many aspects, yes, it is a very good thing.  But it can definitely be a bad thing in many ways as well.

Cataclysm:  Abyssal Maw

In the days of UBRS and MC raiding, who would have ever imagined that the game would be at the point that it is now?  I can remember when raiding MC it took hours to organize a 40 person raid group.  It took days and weeks of raiding just to get a single piece of T1 gear.  Now people can get tier gear without even setting foot in a raid dungeon.  I guess thats my biggest beef with the way WoW has turned out.  It seems that in Blizzard's successful attempt to make the game more casual friendly and enjoyable for everyone, the enjoyment, wonder, and mystery that the game once had has been watered down to taste more like vitamin water, as opposed to the awesome Hi-C flavor that it once had.

Official Cataclysm artwork

And the worst part?  No longer will we be able to go back and enjoy the game the way it used to be played, running on foot for 40 levels, getting griefed for hours in STV, raiding crossroads just for the hell of it, 24 hour AV matches, and controlling a vent full of 40 nerds.  We won't even be able to revisit the environment that was once the most enjoyable aspect of the game.  After Cataclysm launches, Azeroth will never look or feel the same again.

Cataclsym:  Desolace

But I guess if you look at the other side of things, the outlook changes completely.  I can get off of work, run a few heroics, join a pug or two on the weekend, and dps with the best of them.  I no longer have to worry about finding a guild that has to depend on 40+ people to show up on time for a raid, just so I can enjoy endgame content to the fullest.  The World of Warcraft will be completely different than the way I have seen it (almost daily) for the past 6 years, and that truly peaks my interest.  What will it look like, and what will the atmosphere feel like?  The entire game will be changing, and I will probably be taken back by some of the awesome new things to see - much like I was in the original.

Cataclysm:  The Barrens

Personally, even though I have hardly set foot in Azeroth in months, I am really looking forward to the release of Cataclysm.  I'm excited about being excited to play the game again, you know what I mean?  I think I am going to try to form a small group of folks to prepare for the Cataclysm release with.  Meaning I want to run some of the current endgame content that I haven't yet made an effort to see.  But here's the thing...I want to do it from a fresh perspective and a class that I haven't played to its fullest yet.

So, on that note, in the coming days I'll be introducing you guys to my newest alt/main character, and may highlight some of the relatively interesting encounters that I come across on him.  I am thinking Shaman or Warlock.  What do you guys think, have you played either?  Which did you prefer and why?

5 reasons to preorder your copy of Starcraft II

There is no doubt that the hype for Starcraft II is building as I type this post.  With the beta in full swing, and beta keys being given out daily, the number of people who are experiencing the epic enjoyment of this game is on a steep climb.  If you are debating buying Starcraft II to see what the hype is all about, I would suggest you go ahead and preorder your copy right now.  Here are 5 reasons you should take my advice on this:

It carries the torch of the Starcraft legacy

There is no doubt that Starcraft II has some huge shoes to fill.  The original Starcraft, which was released in 1998, has sold over 11 million copies to date, making it the 3rd most popular PC game, and the most popular RTS game in history.  Starcraft helped pioneer the RTS genre that we enjoy today, and it set the standard for nearly every RTS game to follow.  The series has been around for over a decade and is still played competitively around the world.

The fundamentals are the same, yet the experience is new and refreshing
Blizzard has done an incredible job of not fixing what was not broken.  If you played the original Starcraft, you will be able to sit down and begin enjoying Starcraft II to its fullest within minutes.  Even if you never played the original, learning the basics and navigating the interface is quite simple and easy to learn.  However, while all this stays to to the original, Starcraft II offers a completely fresh and new experience, with new abilities, new units, new technology, and much more.

The graphics are great
Graphically and aesthetically speaking, Starcraft II is on a completely different level than its predecessor (obviously, considering the original is 12 years old now).  The detail in this game is incredible and adds a whole new depth to the RTS experience.  You will notice unique death animations based on different circumstances, new warp in animations for Protoss, and random weather effects in certain maps.

The spectator mode overhaul
The spectator mode allows for players to watch matches between other people on a new system that is incredibly robust and enjoyable.  In addition to standard fast forward, pause, and rewind abilities, you are also able to see a standard overview of the entire map, or watch from the perspective of individual players and see exactly what they currently can or cannot see.

In addition, there is the ability to compare between the players economic breakdown, units in production, active units that are in play, actions per minute, and even more.  A replay of every match that is played will instantly be saved to a script file for viewing and reviewing.  This allows players to watch and critique their own performance in order to improve.

Instant access to the Starcraft II Beta
Okay I already mentioned this in a previous post, but just for preordering your Starcraft II through Gamestop and Amazon.com (and as far as I know, only through those two sources) you will get a beta key.  The beta is in full swing, already boasting tournaments, hundreds of videos with commentary, and a healthy and bustling community.

So what are you waiting for?  This game will fill a void that many RTS gamers have had for years now.  And even if you are not an avid RTS geek, but you are just burned out on WoW, you should pick this up and try something new.  You owe it to yourself to preorder this game and claim a beta key for yourself right now!  Even if you don't enjoy it (which you will), the release of Cataclysm will be right around the corner.

Internet addiction? Please...

So as I was checking through the news sites that I frequent yesterday, I came across this gem of an article on Reuters.  A study conducted by the University of Maryland asked 200 of its students to give up their ties to all sources of media (TV, cell phones, computer, music, etc) for 24 hours.  Some of the students claim to have experienced withdrawal symptoms similar to those seen in drug and alcohol addiction.  This includes cravings, anxieties, and difficulty functioning on a normal level.

"I clearly am addicted and the dependence is sickening," said one student.  Another claimed that without texting and Instant Messaging capabilities, he/she "felt quite alone and secluded from life."

...lol, ok.  I have a few issues with this study.  First of all, of course these students would feel somewhat disconnected from the world at large and from themselves without media interaction, because they would, in fact, be disconnected from a majority of the world, and disconnected from a medium which has become a part of life in this day and age.  This is the 21st century, and the media is a part of every day life for every one of us who are fortunate enough to not live in a third world country.  We use media for communicating with friends and family, getting up to speed with news and current events, meeting new people, learning new things, and providing and consuming entertainment.  We could do all of these things without the media, and have done so for many centuries, but with the amount of opportunity that media presents to us...why would we?  What these students are experiencing is not withdrawals and anxiety, it's culture shock.

And what exactly does one do with the results of a pointless study like this?  What could happen is that the information could be given to the American Psychiatric Association, they could declare that "internet addiction" is a disorder, and my tax dollars could go on to fun Internet and Media Addiction Centers all across the United States.  But now I'm just ranting and getting ahead of myself.

Of the 200 students who were involved in the study, the article on Reuters quoted two of them.  That is 1% of the study.  While I'm sure that there was more than that who did wish that they could communicate with their friends without actually having to travel 45 minutes on public transit, they did still seem to make it through the day without going through a detox.  Internet addiction?  Please...

Add the new Facebook Like button to your Blogger blog

At Facebook's F8 conference yesterday, they made many announcements regarding their future and how it will effect the social web moving forward.  One of these announcements was the addition of the Like button on external websites.  Any web user will now be able to "Like" any website that has implemented the widget into their template.  If that user is a registered Facebook user, it will share that activity on their profile, making it public to their friends and affiliates.  This is huge for bloggers and anyone else who uses Facebook for marketing and outreach, as it will make Facebook marketing much more streamlined across the web.

Facebook will let you generate a basic code to use here, but the code does not work for individual pages or blog posts.  To get the most out of your Like button, it takes a few tweaks to the code.

To add the new Like button to your Blogger blog, follow these few easy steps.  You will be set up in 10 minutes time.  Also, for Wordpress users, try this guide.
  1. Go to your blogger dashboard and find the blog that you want to add the button to, and click "Settings".
  2. Click the "Layout" tab at the top left.
  3. Click "Edit HTML" in the sub menu there under the tabs.
  4. Check the box that is labeled "Expand Widget Templates".
  5. Left click anywhere inside of the text box (where your template code is) and press Ctrl+F to search for the following line of code:  <data:post.body/>
  6. On the line directly above it, paste in the following code:

Preview your template to make sure it's good, and click the "Save Template" button.  And there it is, you've been officially setup.  Thanks to devfuel for the quick guide.  If you have any problems with it, post a comment and I'll be glad to help.  If you found this post helpful, click my Like button below!

Want in the Starcraft II beta?

If you're planning on buying the game on release, and are looking forward to getting some practice with your favorite Starcraft II race, here is your chance to get a guaranteed beta key.  Preorder your Starcraft II at any Gamestop location, and you will find a beta key printed on your receipt.  You can also preorder at the Gamestop website, but you will have to wait one business day for your key.  Yes, it is that easy.

A week ago, the keys were selling on ebay for hundreds of dollars (ridiculous, I know).  Now, if you preorder your game, you will get one for free.  So what are you waiting for?  Go take care of business...

Want a healthier mind? Pick up a book...

Over the past few months, I have really rediscovered an old hobby of mine.  It is something that is relaxing, rewarding, and is a healthy activity for my mind.

      Books.

Before I started reading again, it had been probably 4-5 years since I had read a book just for the enjoyment of it, or because it interested me.  For the longest time, I honestly just saw no need to pick up a book.  Why would anyone read a book when there are movies to be watched, games to be played, and websites to be checked?  I mean, when you think about it, books are really quite boring in comparison to gaming, which provides interaction with the game, interaction with other people, and challenges you on multiple levels.  I mean, how can books compete with a force like that?  Well, back then I was young, dumb, and full of...ignorance.

Books have a lot to offer.  It is incredibly rewarding to flip the last page of a great book.  If it is a fictional book, it gives you the freedom and the thrill of exercising your imagination.  It is very relaxing to sit back, read a book, and completely envision everything that the author is telling you.  Sure a plot and a setting is provided by the Author, but the fine details are up to you to decide.

Looking for a good fictional read? try The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie
This is a great read for any lover of dark fantasy

I have found that while I do enjoy reading a good fantasy book here and there, I really like reading books that motivate me.  It feels good reading a book that motivates me so much that I can't stand but to start writing down ideas and taking mental notes as soon as I close the cover.

A great book for getting motivated is Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuk

The book mentioned above is truly a great book to read.  Gary Vaynerchuk, host of Wine Library TV, is a guy who invests everything he is into his passions, his businesses, and his life.  He is truly a motivational guy to his core, and I am appreciative of this book that he has written.  If I had not read it, this blog would still be sitting here collecting pixel dust.  If you are a blogger, a gamer, or hell even a tennis shoe collector, I definitely recommend you give this a read.  Its relatively short, so it is not a huge time investment.  I read it in 2 days on and off.

I'm looking for a new book to read.  What books have you guys read and wouldn't mind recommending to me?  I don't care about genres or categories, as long as it is engaging!

Cataclysm and the future of the Ret Paladin

So, after all the talk yesterday about spending less and less time playing WoW, I thought I would do a WoW related post today just to remind myself, and everyone else, that I do still enjoy playing and keep up with the times in Azeroth.  The Paladin class changes for Cataclysm have been trickling in over the past week or two, and I thought I would go over those and give my thoughts on what I think about each of the updates.

      Retribution Paladin changes in Cataclysm
Blinding Shield (level 81): Causes damage and blinds all nearby targets. This effect might end up only damaging those facing the paladin's shield, in a manner similar to Eadric the Pure's ability Radiance in Trial of the Champion. The Holy tree will have a talent to increase the damage and critical strike chance, while the Protection tree will have a talent to make this spell instant cast. 2-second base cast time. Requires a shield.
This new ability is obviously not a spell designed for use by Retribution paladins.  However, if paired with a weapon swap, it could have limited use in PVP for peeling off of your healer.  However, the fact that it is a 2 second cast will make it practically unusable as an offensive ability.
Healing Hands (level 83): Healing Hands is a new healing spell. The paladin radiates heals from him or herself, almost like a Healing Stream Totem. It has a short range, but a long enough duration that the paladin can cast other heals while Healing Hands remains active. 15-second cooldown. 6-second duration.
Another spell that is blatantly not Retribution material.  However, you can bet that this spell will be widely used by Ret paladins.  Unless the mana cost is substantial (more than Divine Plea and JotW can compensate for), this has the potential of becoming a useful spell for Ret in both PVE and PVP gameplay.
Guardian of Ancient Kings (level 85): Summons a temporary guardian that looks like a winged creature of light armed with a sword. The visual is similar to that of the Resurrection spell used by the paladin in Warcraft III. The guardian has a different effect depending on the talent spec of the paladin. For Holy paladins, the guardian heals the most wounded ally in the area. For Protection paladins, the guardian absorbs some incoming damage. For Retribution paladins, it damages an enemy, similar to the death knight Gargoyle or the Nibelung staff. 3-minute cooldown. 30-second duration (this might vary depending on which guardian appears).
This is one of the more useful spells we will be getting in Cataclysm.  Much like the Deathknight's Gargoyle, it will be a summoned DPS boost on a mid level cooldown.  This will significantly boost Ret's dps when rotated in between Avenging Wrath cooldowns.  Also, this spell is described as "a winged creature of light armed with a sword."  How epic does that sound?  The only thing that could be better about this thing would be a booterang.  It is definitely an overdue and much needed cooldown (for all three trees), but I would have to say that it is hardly a new and exciting ability.  It does the same thing as a DK's Gargoyle, which has been around for quite a while now.
Crusader Strike will be a core ability for all paladins, gained at level 1. We think the paladin leveling experience is hurt by not having an instant attack. Retribution will be getting a new talent in its place that either modifies Crusader Strike or replaces it completely.
Wow, talk about overdue.  Nearly five years into the game's existence, paladins continue to level from 1 all the way to 40 using only two offensive spells!  Judgements and Consecration carry Ret paladins all the way to level 50, are on long cooldowns, and drain mana with the quickness.  So finally we can have a party, because leveling a paladin will finally be somewhat engaging pre BC.
Cleanse is being rebalanced to work with the new dispel system. It will dispel defensive magic (debuffs on friendly targets), diseases, and poisons.
While this change doesn't look like much at a glance, it has an incredible effect on the Retribution tree.  In light of the recent changes to dispel mechanics, we will no longer be able to use Cleanse for defensive utility.  That means no more cleansing Roots, Slow, Frost Nova, etc off of yourself.  This makes Hand of Freedom an incredible crutch for our mobility in PVP (when a healer is not present).
Blessing of Might will provide the benefit of Wisdom as well. If you have two paladins in your group, one will do Kings on everyone and the other will do Might on everyone. There should be much less need, and ideally no need, to provide specific buffs to specific classes.
This is a buff for Ret.  We are getting mp5 that we didn't have previously, and we are getting it for free.  This will also ease the frustration of setting up buff assignments pre-raid.  The only possible negative thing that could be said about this change is that it may reduce the need for a paladin in the raid.
Holy Shock will be a core healing spell available to all paladins.
I would expect to see changes to this in the future, or at least within the Retribution tree.  We already have an ability that is much like this one (Art of War), as in it makes us choose between damage and an instant heal.  If this spell is left the way it is described, it will both give us added burst potential, as well as more survivability.  Which would be nice, but I don't see it going down quite that way.
We want to ease off the defensive capabilities of Retribution and Holy paladins slightly. We think the powerful paladin defenses have been one of the things holding Retribution paladins back, especially in Arenas. One change we're considering is lowering Divine Shield's duration by a couple of seconds. Having said that, Retribution does pretty well in Battlegrounds, and Battlegrounds will be a much bigger focus in Cataclysm since they can provide the best PvP rewards. Furthermore, the healing environment of Cataclysm is going to be different such that a paladin may not be able to fully heal themselves during the duration of Divine Shield to begin with, so this may not be a problem.
Wow, I can't believe that nerfing Divine Shield was even mentioned. If this is followed through with, the infamous bubble hearth will be a thing of the past, which simply cannot be!  No, if trading a few seconds of our bubble in exchange for actual viability in PVP is what they want, then so be it.
We feel Retribution paladins need one more mechanic which involves some risk of the player pushing the wrong button, making the rotation a bit less forgiving. In addition, we want to add to this spec more PvP utility. Right now the successes of the Retribution paladin in PvP seem to be reduced to either doing decent burst damage, or just being good at staying alive.
A more involved rotation sounds quite refreshing, to be honest.  Our rotation falls heavily on 4 abilities, Judge/CS/Consecration/DS.  While we do have added abilities that help pad our dps output, our ability to do damage falls mainly on those 4 spells, which makes poor decisions and fat fingerings only a minor setback.  As for PVP utility, I hope to God that they are considering a gap closer.  Ret is already a very easy target compared to most other melee classes, and that can be attributed almost entirely to the fact that we have very limited options when it comes to closing range on an opponent.  However, even if we don't get the much coveted gap closer, any additional PVP utility will be welcome!
We want to increase the duration of Sacred Shield to 30 minutes and keep the limit to one target. The intention is that the paladin can use it on their main healing target. That said, we would like to improve the Holy paladin toolbox and niche so that they don't feel quite like the obvious choice for tank healing while perceived as a weak group healer.
This is a great thing, no matter how you look at it.  Sacred Shield is vital to us and our role in PVP, and it has proven to have its uses for Ret in PVE as well.  Not having to refresh it ever 30 seconds will be a burden off of our shoulders!

So there it is.  All the changes, wrapped up into a relatively long post.  While my playtime has indeed gone down, I do try to keep up to speed on changes and announcements that are made.  And I'm looking forward to playing Cataclysm.  The changes that the blues have enlightened us on, so far, are hardly impressive.  However, there is promise of a better Ret experience in Cataclysm if you read into things a bit more.
      1. We will either be getting a new offensive ability all together, or Crusader Strike will be getting juiced up.  Either way, it is promising in and of itself.
      2. Holy Shock is becoming a baseline ability and has a chance of finding its way into our rotation.
      3. Our dps rotation will be more involved, more strategic, and more fun to play as a result.
While there are indeed some disappointing aspects in these changes, we have nowhere near enough information from Blizzard to warrant a paladin uprising, dev bashing, or hate mail.  So just relax, have a beer, recover from 4/20, and wait for the beta to be released.  Then we can begin celebrating...or uprising.

Extensions to enrich your Google Chrome experience

I will be the first to say, I love Google.  I love the fact that they offer many of the great products that other companies, but do it for free.  I love the fact that their company seems to have a respectable moral and ethical stance in an industry that is severely lacking in that area today.  I also love their internet browser, Chrome.  For me, it just seems a bit cleaner and more polished than it's competitors.

One of the best features of Chrome is the Extensions.  What is an Extension?  Basically, it is an app designed for your browser that offers additional  functionality.  I thought I would take a minute and list out some of my favorite extensions for Chrome.  If you are looking to try out the extensions feature in Chrome, maybe start with a few of these.
      • Chromed Bird - This is an extension for managing your Twitter account.  You can compose tweets, view timelines, send direct messages, manage lists, and do basically anything you would want to do from your twitter account.  This is by far the best Twitter extension I have found for Chrome.
      • Google Reader Notifier - Adds a button to your browser that will notify you when a new unread item appears in your Google Reader.  Clicking the button will show a drop box with links to all of the unread items.  Very useful for bloggers and RSS whores, if you use Google Reader that is.
      • Delicious Tools - Bookmark manager for Delicious.com.  Allows you to add a bookmark from any page or jump directly to your inbox and bookmarks pages.  Simple and effective.
      • goo.gl URL Shortener - Google's URL shortener.  When you click the button, it shortens the url.  Its fast and easy, in complete Google fashion.
      • Digg for Chrome - Digg's official Chrome extension.  Allows you to submit the current site to digg or share the story with multiple other social platforms.
      • SmoothScroll - Makes mouse and keyboard scrolling smoother.
      • Aviary Screen Capture - Allows you to take a screenshot of your current window and edit the screenshot without having to ever leave your browser.  Very handy extension.
      • Google Dictionary - Allows you to see the definition of a word by either doubleclicking the word directly or clicking the dictionary extension button and typing the word in.
I do use a few others, but they are mostly for personal preference.  If there is interest, I'll post those as well.  If you decide to try one of these out based on my recommendation, let me know in a comment below!  Tell me if you find the extensions you tried useful, or if you thought they were a complete waste of time.

The blogger formerly known as Smashie

If you're reading this post (from my blog, not in your reader), then you probably have noticed my new banner...and new title.  If you are reading this post from your reader, swing by the blog and give it a look.  Why the change?  Queue the long and drawn out explanation in 3, 2, 1:

A lot has changed over the past year.  I play WoW about a quarter of the amount of time that I used to, which has left me with a lot more time for enjoying the better things in life.  Things like my family, my fiancĂ©e, my friends, my health, my hobbies, and my community.  While I got a real enjoyment and satisfaction out of playing WoW, I had let it become a distraction to me.  It never got to the point of missing work, or ignoring my woman, or gaining 100 pounds and acne, but I did invest a lot of time and energy into something that I will never truly see a return on.

I find it appropriate that since my gaming interest and "career" has taken a different direction, and since my blog has taken a bit of a different direction since its inception, that I rename it to something a bit more reflective of my interests.  I want this blog to be more about me, my hobbies, my stories, and my LIFE.  Not that of my Paladin on WoW.  So I can hear you asking yourself "What the hell does Medwards mean?"  How can I hear what you're saying?  I'm standing outside your window, but never mind that.

Medwards is my first initial and last name.  Michael Edwards.  It was a name given to me as a computer login at a former job, and people there found it humorous and started calling me that every now and then.  So there you have it.  I know this will probably cause confusion in the long run, seeing as I show up as Smashie on other's blogrolls and links, but thats alright.  I'll probably be commenting as Smashie for the remainder of the week, then officially switch to medwards.  It's a process, you know?

      Introducing the 4th generation iphone

Holy nerdgasm, batman!  The "iphone 4g" has made a surprise appearance on all of the tech websites on the internets today.  Who would've thought?  If this is in fact a leak (I have my doubts), I know Apple and Steve must be absolutely livid right now.  Some of the new and bold features this phone includes:
      • Sleeker look.  The back is no longer beveled, and the former plastic trim is now metallic.  The back of the phone appears to have a glass or ceramic look to it, which gives the phone huge sex appeal, in my opinion.
      • It is a tad heavier, yet thinner than the 3gs
      • Front facing camera (make way for video-calling apps)
      • A better camera on the backside with an LED flash.  I would imagine this will be at least a 5mpx camera, possibly an 8mpx.
      • Dual microphones (presumably for noise cancellation)
      • MicroSIM slot
The guys at gizmodo seem pretty confident that this is in fact the iphone of 2010.  I don't doubt the legitimacy of that claim, because they are the pro's, but I'm a bit skeptical that this thing was lost in a random bar, and somehow landed in the hands of one of the largest tech websites around today.  Also, I don't think this iphone will be known as the "iphone 4g."  While this will be the iphone 4g, as in the 4th generation of the device, I think that would cause confusion with the coming of the 4g network on Sprint's network.

Will I be getting this phone?  I'm not sure.  At the present moment, I doubt it.  I have grown quite cynical of Apple, Steve Jobs, and the way that they do business.  Apple has a lot of power in the mobile market at the present, but I think that their close-minded CEO and their restrictive nature as an employer will have a negative effect on their company and their products in the long run.  But hey, if I buy an Android device and am not happy with it, I will definitely be carrying around one of these puppies (given the iphone on Verizon rumors are legit) in the future.  No matter who runs the company, or how they run it...as a consumer, if you put out the best product on the market, I will buy it.  I will admit that the manliness and clean edges of this phone is very appealing to me.  If you want to know more about this iphone on steroids, head on over to gizmodo and check out the exclusive article, chock full of pics and video.

Update:  The rumor is now that the new iphone will be tagged the iphone HD.

Droid Incredible - Taking Big Red to Another Level

Over the course of last week, it was announced that Verizon would be officially launching the Droid Incredible (made by HTC) on April 29th.  Truth be told, if you're not into gadgets and cell phones, you most likely have a very limited knowledge of this impressive device.  However, this smartphone has had a few brief appearances and a nip slip or two within the geek community, giving it quite the nerd herd following.

So what exactly is the Droid Incredible and what does it have to offer?  Well, lets begin with a few specs, shall we?

In my opinion, this is the smartphone that will push Big Red (Verizon) to another level of doing business.  To date, Verizon has had a very tight selection of quality smart phones available to their huge customer base.  The closest they have to a competition-level smart phone is the Motorolla Droid, which is already outdated in terms of hardware.  While I am in no way discrediting the power and the quality of the Moto Droid, it simply will not be able to compete on the same level as the Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, and iphone 4g will.

The Droid Incredible is a savior to many Verizon customers who have been wanting a great touchscreen phone with a satisfying user experience for a very long time.  It goes on preorder on April 19th (today), and will arrive in Verizon stores on April 29th.  Coming from a tired and frustrated Crackberry user, it would be in your best interest not to get between me and the nearest Verizon Wireless on that day!  I can't wait to get my foot in the door of the mobile gaming scene, finally!  If I can get ahold of a respectable web cam before April 29th, I will possibly do an unboxing video, as well as a video review.

      Console Wars

I know that a majority of the readers who give a crap about this blog are probably more in touch with gaming on a PC, as opposed to the consoles.  But personally, I enjoy console gaming a lot.  It gives me a chance to kick back, relax, and stuff my face with junk food in a way that PC games just don't seem to do anymore.  They fill a void of laziness in me that WoW, Starcraft II, or any other PC game cannot.

Technobuffalo, a tech website that I frequent, has made a vlog series that they have titled "Console Wars," which compares the Xbox 360 on multiple levels.  The series is highly informative and entertaining and I recommend watching all 10 rounds, as there are still a few rounds to come.  Some of the episodes can be a bit lengthy, so you will probably be better off watching them round by round, as you get the spare time.  But I will warn you, after you watch the first one it is hard not to continue.  The narrator does an excellent job of giving his unbiased opinion when comparing each of the consoles on equal levels.

When you get a few minutes to spare at work, or you have some time to kill at the house, give them a look and let me know what you think.  Whether you play console games or not, the series is very well done and you will definitely learn something new.  But most importantly, you will be entertained.

      Nashville and back

I took a trip to Nashville, TN this weekend to visit an old buddy from High School.  He is there aspiring as a musician, and I had a great time seeing the city out, drinking beer, and just jamming out good music all weekend.  The downside?  No time, what-so-ever, for R&R.  I got off work Wednesday night, left for TN Thursday morning at 8pm, got back from TN Saturday night at 11pm, left for work Sunday at 3pm.  But it was worth it, Tennessee is a beautiful state.  It makes me want to live near the mountains.

I'm trying to get back into the swing of things, and I have a few posts lined up for this week.  Some Starcraft II related, some social media related, and some related to my personal interests.  RSS me and keep your eyes peeled!

      Starcraft II beta

Over the easter weekend, I received my beta key from blizzard for Starcraft 2.  I never played the original Starcraft, and to be honest, I've never really played any games in the RTS genre.  But after playing the beta for about 4 hours, I was hooked.  I haven't been sucked into a game like that since I started playing WoW.  It can be frustrating, due to the learning curve that I'm on though.  It seems like everyone who is playing the game is a pro.  I can't really practice vs the cpu because very easy is the only option available in beta.  So I play online, and get whipped almost every single game.  But even still, its fun.  I hope to become a much better player in the near future.  We'll see how that goes I guess.

I can't help but think about Cataclysm being right around the corner.  These games must be releasing fairly close to each other, and to be honest, I think I'm more exited about the SC2 release than I am about Cataclysm.  Don't get me wrong, I'll still be playing Cataclysm and probably will eat these words when it comes out, but I'm just excited to be getting into something that is completely new to me.  Not just a new story line or a new game, but a whole new genre in general.  It's exciting.  I'll be going over a few of my favorite features of Starcraft II in detail in a future blog post.  What games are you guys looking forward to for 2010?
